Fast Growing Intellectual Leadership of India Towards Vikshit Bharat 2047 : By Prof. (Dr.) Tabrez Ahmad
India has its own illustrious history of innovations spanning at least 20 centuries right from the invention of 'zero' and the decimal system. India was known as the 'Vishwa guru'.
We must regain that intellectual leadership, we must again emerge as a global hub of learning and innovation. India is growing faster by securing its position among the top 10 countries globally for trademarks, patents, industrial designs, as per the (WIPI) World Intellectual Property Indicators 2024 Report by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). This shows India's continuous focus on creativity, manufacturing and innovation excellence.
Record-Breaking Growth in Patents. Ranking 6th globally, India filed 64,480 patent applications, with 55.2% coming from residents—a significant milestone. Even more impressive, the Indian patent office granted 149.4% more patents compared to the previous year. India ranked 4th globally in trademark filings, with a 6.1% increase in 2023. Resident filings dominated the landscape, making up nearly 90% of total filings.
India’s patent-to-GDP ratio more than doubled in the past decade, rising from 144 to 381. It is clearly reflecting that Intellectual Property activity is expanding side by side economic escalation, boosting the linkages between innovation and economic development. The sectors leading the charge include: Agriculture (15.3%);Health (21.9%);Clothing (12.8%).
India became the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth, underscoring the impact of India’s evolving ecosystem of intellectual property Rights (IPR) and government initiatives aimed at fostering innovation. Industrial Design Applications Surge by 36.4%. India recorded a 15.7% growth in patent applications in 2023, leading all top 20 global origins. India’s industrial design applications grew by an impressive 36.4%, highlighting the nation’s strong emphasis on product design, manufacturing, and creative industries. Leading sectors include: Health and Cosmetics; Textiles and Accessories; Tools and Machines; These three sectors accounted for nearly half of all design filings, reflecting India’s expanding footprint in global manufacturing and innovation. India’s trademark office is now home to the second-largest number of active registrations worldwide, with over 3.2 million trademarks in force. These developments are greatly influencing the locate innovations. India’s achievements come amidst a global surge in intellectual property activity.
In 2023, 3.55 million patent applications were filed worldwide, with notable contributions from India, alongside China, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. This global growth reflects a rising emphasis on local innovation and domestic IP ecosystems. Now for the future vibrancy and continued progress in intellectual property filings is not just an evidence to the country’s innovation potential but also a reflection of good regulations, government initiatives, and a amalgamating ecosystem of entrepreneurs & inventors. Innovation has always been key defining feature of human progress. We have highly talented youths brimming with new ideas, with a passion for implementation and willingness to forge a new path.
The youth will define our country's future. They need encouragement, facilitation and recognition, they must be given needed guidance and freedom to explore new frontiers . For the greater success innovation should become a people's movement, the concerted efforts are needed to make students out-of-the-box thinkers. There should be concerted efforts to inculcate the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among our students to make them out-of-the-box thinkers, creative problem solvers, entrepreneurs and job creators than job seekers. As India continues to strengthen its IP landscape, it’s poised to become a global innovation leader, inspiring the world with its advancements in technology, creativity, and economic resilience.
